Darcie Sternenberg’s new show, A Black and White Canyon, opens on Friday March 1st at The Photographers’ Gallery At The Ashland Art Center.
One of the seven wonders of the natural world, the Grand Canyon is truly a remarkable site to behold. “The rocks are chiefly variegated shades of beautiful colors –creamy orange above, then bright vermilion, and below, purple and chocolate beds, with green and yellow sands.” These are the words Major John Wesley Powell used to describe the colors of the Grand Canyon. But when color is removed the entire feel of the canyon is transformed. Shapes, form and tones take center stage. This collection of images in black and white is meant to offer a unique view of a familiar place.
