Sue Yamins is one of the featured artists in the Annual Holiday Salon. Two
of her sculptures are currently included in a national juried exhibition at
the Erie Art Museum in Erie, PA. “Focus: Fiber – a collection of innovative
and inspiring works that exemplify the vibrant world of fiber arts today”.
Sue uses gourds as her base and a coiling process to create the sculptured
basketry.
“The designs are wood burned into the gourd and colors are applied with
dyes. Once the gourd is completed the coiling begins.
I like to use a variety of materials for the coiling. They can be made of
pine needles, grasses, cattails, fiber rush or polished hemp. I also use
different materials for the stitching including waxed linen, raffia,
artificial sinew, silk and wool.
Each project begins with an idea and then develops and changes as the piece is actually made.”
The annual exhibit at Hanson Howard Gallery features salon style hanging that includes many gallery artists and rotates to add new work during the month of December.
