Pictured is a close-up of one of Tatsuya
Nakatani’s percussion instruments.
Expressing an unusually strong spirit
while resisting genre, Nakatani creates
sound with both traditional and extended
percussion techniques. Utilizing adapted
bowed gongs, drums, cymbals, singing
bowls, metal objects, bells, and even
various sticks, kitchen tools, and his
own breath, Nakatani manifests intense
and organic music that represents a very
personal, sonic world.
OREGON FRINGE FESTIVAL
Ashland Gallery Guide 39
Each spring, the Oregon
Center for the Arts
at Southern Oregon
University produces the
Oregon Fringe Festival,
a multi-day event
creativity. The OFF is a boundarybreaking
platform for free expression.
We celebrate unconventional art in
unconventional space, and work to
secure a tolerant space for the sharing
of ideas through story. The OFF is
first and foremost a crossroads for
SOU students and visiting artists to
showcase and engage each other’s
creative work. This includes, and is
not limited to, live music, theatre,
movement and dance, creative writing,
and even the visual arts.
2020 marks the OFF’s 7th annual
festival, which takes place April
21–26, at varying times from Tuesday
through Sunday. There will be a
complete schedule closer to the event.
The SOU campus is the main location;
among specific spaces are Stevenson
Union, and the Digital Media Center.
Off campus locations include the
Ashland Public Library, and Levity
Circus Collective off of Hersey Street.
For those unfamiliar with SOU’s campus
and would like more info on parking,

you on the stage or in the seats!
