The prints made by fallen leaves on the sidewalk after a rainstorm inspired me to use leaves in paintings on Mulberry paper. One fine day, I brought one of my tempera paintings to an artist-run figure drawing session and drew the model on it. It was a ‘Eureka!’ moment. The drawing expressed something poetic about us and the congruences between our human selves and Nature. The visual congruences allude to deeper ones. The joining of arm to shoulder and of leaf vein to stem are similar. Nature makes a joint that moves, has nuance and pulsates with energy. Like the leaves on a tree, our aliveness is replete with water, air, and heat. Our blood runs along branching pipelines. Our feelings come from our gut. Thought itself moves through dendrites and across synapses. In the same way, sap makes its way through a tree. Some of our deepest imaginings come from the visual poetry of Nature seen again in Art. After closing Gallery DeForest, Cathy DeForest moved her printing press and etching press to her new farmhouse studios just 5 minutes from Ashland. Come to Cathy’s first open studio! Your visit will include demonstrations by co-owner Derek Pyle on an antique printing press and a tour of the book arts studio. Cathy will show her most recent work: etchings, artist books, poetry pockets and letterpress broadsides. Special guest, Tahnja Pyle, will exhibit jewelry. Hours: 3:00-8:00 on FF, July 1.
Charles Cangilose received his masters in fine art from California University at Los Angeles in painting and printmaking. He exhibited at numerous galleries in the Los Angeles area. Upon moving to Southern Oregon, he taught art at Rogue Community College for five years. The works on display are cut aluminum shapes of various thicknesses fitted together and painted with automotive paints.

Textile Artist Jo Ann Manzone is featured in December during the December First Friday Art Walk at Ashland Art Center. Jo Ann will be displaying her Nuno Felting work, which is a new, innovative technique that attaches felt to fabric which then can be made into clothing or textile art. During the Art Walk, she will be demonstrating this technique upstairs in her studio # 9. Friday, December 2, 5:00 – 8:00 pm at 357 E Main St, Ashland All Ages Welcome! Live Music by Planet Lullaby, a father – daughter duo Art, Artists and studios on all three floors of the Art Center!
